HANDBUILDING CLAY WORKSHOP:
FINDING IDENTITY IN CLAY

JODIE MONTEIRO | FERTICLAY

Moderated by
NOJO

In this workshop, participants will be taught traditional pottery techniques to make their very own personalised pot from Ferticlay. Following which, they will decorate it according to some reference to a woman in their lives that they wish to honour, create shapes or patterns that a specific female designer is known to use, or they can reference to themselves. Using clay as a medium to create additions to the form of a simple pot allows each participant to walk away with a meaningful artwork that not only captures the essence of theirs/someone else’s identity or personality, but the pot is designed to be a transient object that will eventually be replanted in a permanent pot to release the packed-up nutrients as well. The beauty of the object goes deep, and it is therefore not just surface decoration that makes each pot beautiful. This advocates for the idea of sustainable design as a consideration for every single facet and point in the life cycle of each product and place we encounter. Scroll down to see what happened.

Ferticlay
Jodie Monteiro

Ferticlay, as its name suggests, is a fertilising clay. We aim to be earth connoisseurs, innovating bespoke design solutions from food waste-based clay materials. A deep sense of conviction about the disregard of high-value waste materials led us to create Ferticlay, and with every tile, brick, or sculpture we create, we hope to change the perceptions people have towards waste and spread the spirit of creative resourcefulness.
